Anthony Bumhira was born on the 16th October 1985.
He attended schools in and around Harare. In 2003, he enrolled with the B.A.T Visual Art Studios, supported by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. In 2005 he graduated with Honours and was awarded a residency with the National Gallery in Harare.
Since then, Anthony has exhibited in many group shows around Zimbabwe as well as abroad.
He works as a full-time artist in Harare and continues to explore different media. His work is always light hearted, exploring day to day life in Harare, echoing a sense of humour in the face of struggle and hardship, which is so typical of Zimbabweans.
Anthony has received several awards for his work, including the NAMA award for outstanding 2-dimensional work in 2016, 2ndPrize at the Mharidzo Exhibition, NGZ in 2015 and the Delta Gallery Award of Merit in 2010.
“My work is inspired by children.
Seeing the simplicity and honesty in children’s paintings touched me and that is when I began to simplify my own work to echo that sentiment.
Children are naturally creative and draw and paint from instinct, rather than focussing on tone or composition, or from a style that they have been taught. Their work is very pure.”
