Amanzi Gallery, Harare, Zimbabwe

Vanessa Goodson-Hounsell

“There are no rules other than those we choose to impose upon ourselves.”

What a perfect way to describe this week’s featured artist at Amanzi Gallery. Vanessa Goodson-Hounsell is a fine artist and illustrator working in oil colour, mixed media and photography.

Vanessa grew up in the beautiful city of Cape Town where she completed her primary and secondary education before moving onto the University of Cape Town where she studied Architecture, English Literature and Economic History.

Vanessa moved to London from Cape Town in 1992. The following twelve years she combined a London career in journalism and publishing with her fine art practise, thereafter relocating to live in Harare in 2005.

The attention to detail is what sets Vanessa apart, the ability to see beauty in its most basic form. To look at life from a different angle, to recognise a mood and capture it. An abandoned table after dinner, a chandelier with melting candles, seascapes encapsulate mood - wild, stormy, the underlying power of the natural beast, the feel of the storm swept sea, the sweep of the bare, endless sands. Examples of everyday life which most of us would often overlook, but Vanessa has the eye to see an image and get it on paper.

Vanessa has exhibited her work both abroad in the UK and also locally here in Zimbabwe with group exhibitions at The Village Walk gallery, the Luckybean gallery, Willowmede, The National gallery, Christopher Kaye, the Wingate annual art exhibition, Wildgeese Art Fair, Paintings & Pimms, solo show at the Artmoods studio/gallery and now at Amanzi Gallery.

In addition to this, her work is included in many private collections in RSA, Europe and the UK.

Vanessa now works as a practicing artist/illustrator, art teacher and art therapist from her studio at home where she lives with her husband Barrie and three children, Luc, Sophie and Liam. Vanessa teaches Artmood workshops for adults which involve a learning through action approach. Artists are encouraged to tap into their internal creative centres, thus making their own aesthetic choices. She also runs specialized workshops, such as book illustration for adults, and Mini Masters for kids - aimed at creatively empowering children.

We are very proud to exhibit Vanessa’s work at Amanzi Gallery. If you would like to purchase any of her pieces or find out about her classes please get in touch with the team at Amanzi Restaurant.
